How Amazon charges · the rates on this receipt
The referral fee runs on the total sales price: item price plus shipping and gift wrap the buyer pays. Some categories price by the whole total (clothing pays 5%, 10%, or 17% depending on which side of $15 and $20 the total lands), and some price by portion (jewelry pays 20% on the first $250 and 5% above it). The category picker knows which is which. FBA fulfillment is priced per unit by size and weight, and Amazon's FBA page points sellers to the Revenue Calculator for the figure; type yours into the receipt. How much does Amazon take per sale?
Start with the referral fee, set by category and charged on the total sales price, then add your plan cost. On a $30.00 Home and Kitchen item with no shipping charged, the referral fee is $4.50. On the Individual plan the plan fee is $0.99, so total Amazon fees are $5.49 and you keep $24.51 before your shipping cost. On the Professional plan the $39.99 a month takes the per item fee away, and this receipt spreads it across your month's orders instead.
Why does the category change the fee so much?
Because Amazon prices the referral fee by category, from 8% for electronics to 45% for Amazon Device Accessories, and a few categories move with price. Clothing and Accessories charges 5% at $15 or less, 10% up to $20, and 17% over $20. A $48.00 clothing order pays $8.16 in referral fees. The same $48.00 in electronics pays $3.84. On the Professional plan at 200 orders a month, the plan adds $0.20 to that clothing order, for $8.36 in fees and $39.64 kept. Price with the category's rate, not the headline 15%.
Does Amazon charge the referral fee on shipping?
Yes. The referral fee is a percentage of the total sales price, which includes the item price plus any shipping and gift wrap charges the buyer pays. Charge $5.00 shipping on a $25.00 item and the fee runs on $30.00. Sellers who charge shipping separately sometimes miss this; the calculator asks for shipping charged as its own line so the fee base is right.
What does FBA add on top of the referral fee?
A per unit fulfillment fee set by your product's size tier and weight, plus monthly storage by the cubic foot. Amazon does not publish one flat FBA number because there is not one; its own guidance sends sellers to the Revenue Calculator in Seller Central for the per unit figure. Choose FBA on the receipt and type that figure in. The referral fee and plan cost are the same either way. What changes is who packs the box, and what that costs per unit.
