There is no transaction fee on top of Shopify Payments. The 2% appears only when a third party gateway takes the payment, and your gateway still charges its own rate underneath it. International cards add 1% to the card rate. Higher plans (Grow, Advanced, Plus) charge more per month and less per order; Shopify keeps the current figures for every plan on its pricing page, and the plan price field on this receipt takes whatever plan you are actually on. How much does Shopify take per sale?
There is no commission and no marketplace cut. On the Basic plan with Shopify Payments, an online order costs the card rate of 2.9% plus $0.30, plus your share of the monthly plan. On a $50.00 order, processing is $1.75. Spread a $39 plan over 100 orders in a month and the plan adds $0.39 per order, for $2.14 total and $47.86 kept. Sell more orders and the plan slice shrinks; the card rate does not move.
Does Shopify charge a transaction fee on top of card fees?
Only when you skip Shopify Payments. Process with Shopify Payments and there is no extra transaction fee, just the card rate. Process with a third party gateway and Shopify adds its own transaction fee, 2% of the order on Basic, on top of the gateway's charges. On a $120.00 order that is $2.40 to Shopify plus $3.78 to a gateway charging 2.9% plus $0.30: $6.18 before the plan cost, against $3.78 total processing had the same order run through Shopify Payments. The receipt has a gateway rate field so you can run your own gateway's numbers.
What does Shopify cost per month before any sales?
The plan itself. Basic is $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 a month billed yearly. That is the whole fixed bill before apps, a paid theme, or a domain. Processing only starts when orders do. This is the real difference from a marketplace: Shopify charges you rent whether or not you sell, and a marketplace charges you only when you do. The break even question is volume, and the orders field on the receipt is there so you can watch the plan cost per order fall as yours grows.
Does Shopify charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The card rate runs on the full amount the customer pays, item plus shipping charged, the same way most card processing works. Charge $10.00 shipping on a $110.00 item and processing runs on $120.00. Offering free shipping does not dodge the rate, it just moves the shipping amount into your price.
