The fee waterfall

How eBay charges · the rates on this receipt

Insertion fee Free x 250 a month, then $0.35
Final value fee, most categories 13.6% of the total
Books, movies, music 15.3% of the total
Per order fee $0.30 to $10, $0.40 over
Separate processing fee None, it is inside the fee

The percentage runs on the total amount of the sale: item price plus shipping collected plus sales tax. Above $7,500, most categories drop to 2.35% on the portion over. A few categories break the pattern and the receipt knows them: sneakers over $150 pay 8% with no per order fee, watches step down through three tiers, guitars pay 6.7%. An international fee is added when the buyer's address is outside the US, and accounts rated Below Standard pay more. Schedule source: eBay Seller Center, Seller fees, as published October 2026.

eBay fees, answered plainly

How much does eBay take per sale?

It depends on the category, because the final value fee is category priced. For a US seller without a Store subscription, add the final value fee for your category and a per order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less, $0.40 over $10. In most categories the final value fee is 13.6%. On a $46.00 order, a $40.00 item plus $6.00 shipping, total fees are $6.66 and you keep $39.34. Run your own numbers above and the receipt itemizes each line.

What are eBay fees in 2026?

Using eBay's published US schedule as of October 2026: insertion is free for your first 250 listings each month, then $0.35 per listing. The final value fee ranges by category, 13.6% in most categories, 15.3% for books, movies, and music, 13.25% for trading cards, with lower rates for a few categories like guitars at 6.7% and heavy equipment at 3%. The per order fee is $0.30 or $0.40. There is no separate payment processing fee. It is built into the final value fee, which is why eBay's percentage looks higher than a card rate.

Does eBay charge the final value fee on shipping and tax?

Yes, on both. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale: the item price, any shipping collected from the buyer, sales tax, and other applicable fees. Charge $6.00 shipping on a $40.00 item and the fee runs on $46.00, not $40.00. That is why the calculator asks for shipping charged, and has a line for tax collected, as their own inputs.

What does eBay take on a book sale?

Books sit in eBay's most expensive common tier at 15.3%. On a $22.00 order, an $18.00 book plus $4.00 shipping, the final value fee is $3.37, the per order fee is $0.40, total fees are $3.77 and you keep $18.23. Media sellers feel the category table more than anyone, so the category picker on the receipt matters.
